Lampard hails one player after Chelsea draws 2-2 with Monchengladbach

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has hailed Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper, Yann Sommer by describing the 30-year-old’s performance as ‘fantastic’ following his side’s pre-season friendly 2-2 draw against the Bundesliga side on Saturday at Borussia-Park Stadium.
Lampard noted that Sommer’s brilliant display prevented his players from scoring more goals against Monchengladbach.
Alassane Plea and Jonas Hofmann had given Monchengladbach a 2-0 first-half lead before Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley scored two second-half penalties to ensure Lampard’s side got a point.
“I think we should have won,” Lampard was quoted by Chelsea’s official website as saying after the match.
“I was not happy with the first-half performance, we conceded two bad goals, one was our mistake, the other was a counter-attack, and we weren’t as we should be in the first half.
At half-time, I asked for a reaction and the team gave a big reaction. We could have scored a lot more goals, their goalkeeper has been fantastic for them. I think we should have won but it was a very tough game, a good exercise for us against a very good team.”

EPL: Lampard identifies Chelsea player that gave him problem

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has identified midfielder, Mason Mount as the player that has given him a problem at the club ahead of the 2019/20120 season.
Lampard admitted that the 20-year-old England youngster has done a lot for Chelsea during pre-season, adding that he could force his way into his plans.
Mason, who has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Stamford Bridge club, was impressive during their pre-season.
He scored a brace against Reading last weekend and was outstanding against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.
“Mason done a lot,” Lampard was quoted by Daily Mail as saying after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw against after the draw against Monchengladbach on Saturday.
“I’m really happy with how he’s training, how he’s playing and his status in the group coming back here.
“The players recognise quality instantly but they also recognise work rate and character — and Mason has all of those. He has given me a problem.”
Lampard added: “Ross Barkley also had a good pre-season and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be back later on. It’s good, as they’re all adaptable. It doesn’t have to be just one. They can play in a variety of positions.
“I couldn’t ask for more from what Mason has done.”

EPL: Lampard compared to Guardiola

Former Chelsea assistant coach, Bolo Zenden, has compared manager Frank Lampard to Manchester City counterpart, Pep Guardiola.
Guardiola was only 37 when he took over at Barcelona in 2008 but went on to lead the LaLiga giants through one of its most trophy-laden eras.
Lampard took the Stamford Bridge job this summer at 41, becoming the first British manager under Roman Abramovich.
Zenden, who joined the Blues from Barca in 2001 – the same year Lampard arrived at Stamford Bridge from West Ham – insists his old team-mate is ready for the job and that he can be a success.
“I know Frank did very well at Derby County, so it was a good time for him to go to Chelsea.
“Guardiola was only young when he was appointed at Barcelona, so I don’t see why this is any different.
“He can do well, he is a clever guy and earned his stripes as a player. Who knows how it will go? But he is bright and deserves a chance,” Zenden said according to the UK Mirror.

AFCON 2019: Baxter quits as South Africa coach after flop

England-born Stuart Baxter quit Friday as South Africa coach after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Egypt during June and July.
“I feel that I cannot continue to work with the required professionalism and passion as I have done,” the 65-year-old told a press conference at a Johannesburg sports club.
Baxter was widely unpopular with the South African public, while the media welcomed his decision to leave a job reportedly worth 490,000 rands ($33,500/30,000 euros) a month.
Reacting recently to constant criticism, Baxter said there were “54 million national coaches in South Africa”, a reference to the 58.7 million population of the country.
Although Bafana Bafana (The Boys) stunned Cup of Nations hosts Egypt in the round of 16, they made a timid exit against Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
They had been even more unimpressive at the group stage, losing to the Ivory Coast and Morocco and struggling to overcome minnows Namibia.
Previously, Baxter had flopped in a 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign, losing four of five matches as South Africa finished bottom of a group won by Senegal.
The Wolverhampton-born coach had a first stint coaching South Africa with little success a decade ago, failing to take the country to the 2006 World Cup.
He is the ninth coach to quit or be fired since the Cup of Nations ended on July 19 with Algeria defeating Senegal in the final.
Former Dutch star Clarence Seedorf was the highest-profile casualty with defending champions Cameroon sacking him following a last-16 loss to Nigeria.
Hosts Egypt fired Mexican Javier Aguirre, Namibia dumped Ricardo Mannetti, Guinea ditched Belgian Paul Put and Tanzania dropped Nigerian Emmanuel Amunike after poor campaigns.
French coaches Herve Renard and Sebastien Desabre left Morocco and Uganda respectively and Sunday Chidzambwa quit Zimbabwe.
Renard, the most high profile coach in Africa and the only one to guide two countries to the Cup of Nations title, has been hired by Saudi Arabia.
Desabre, who took Uganda to the knockout phase for the first time since 1978, moved to Egyptian club Pyramids, who will debut in the second-tier CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Frank Lampard gave me Chelsea No. 9 shirt – Tammy Abraham

Frank Lampard gave me Chelsea No. 9 shirt - Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham appears ready to play a big role at Chelsea this season, with the striker revealing that manager Frank Lampard has asked him to take the No. 9 shirt.
Abraham scored in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday, as he continues to build a case that he should be involved with the Blues in 2019-20.

The 21-year-old has spent the past three seasons out on loan, playing for Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa, with his 25 league goals last season helping the Villans secure promotion to the Premier League.
With Chelsea currently under a transfer ban, they are unable to sign any new players, leaving them with just Abraham, Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi as recognised senior strikers.
England international Abraham appears in line to benefit, as he revealed that his manager has big plans for him this upcoming season.

“I am honoured to wear the No. 9 shirt at Chelsea,” Abraham told reporters after the Barcelona game at Saitama Stadium in Japan. “It was a fantastic performance by everyone today.
“I spoke to the manager and he asked me if I am ready to take the No. 9. I said I am ready.
“I am glad he offered the No. 9. I think football brings a lot of pressure but it strives me on. It gives me that extra belief to go on and do well.”

The No. 9 shirt at Chelsea has been something of a poisoned chalice in recent seasons, with a host of Blues players failing to live up to expectations while wearing the famous number.
Gonzalo Higuain, Alvaro Morata, Radamel Falcao and Fernando Torres are just a few of the players who have underwhelmed in the No. 9 shirt.
Abraham, however, is not concerning himself with talk that his new number at Chelsea carries any sort of a curse.

“I have heard all the rubbish about the [curse] of the No. 9 shirt,” Abraham said. “I am just here to play my game and do my best.”
Abraham burst onto the scene with Bristol City in 2016-17, scoring 23 goals in the Championship to earn himself a loan move to Premier League side Swansea the following season.
The striker did not quite hit the same heights with the Swans in 2017-18, as he managed five Premier League goals in a season that saw the South Wales outfit relegated to the Championship.
But Abraham bounced back with another stellar campaign in the Championship last term, which appears to have him on the verge of a prominent role at Chelsea this upcoming season.
